Newborn Photography faq's

Why are newborn photos important?

A.Newborn photography is the best way to remember a time in your baby’s life that passes in the blink of an eye. New parents often feel this treasured time goes by too fast, and a baby photoshoot can help preserve these memories.

Is newborn photography safe?

A.With a certification in first aid and up-to-date vaccinations, I am 100% dedicated to your baby's safety and well-being in every session. I have over eight years of experience in newborn photography and more than 15 years of experience working with children, so you can feel comfortable knowing that your newborn will be safe with me.

How do you prepare for newborn pictures?

A.The best newborn photoshoots are taken when your baby is sleepy, so try to keep them awake before your session. We recommend loosening their nappy, wraps and clothing 30 minutes before your shoot to eliminate any imprints on the skin.

How many days old is best for newborn photos?

A.The best newborn photos are captured when your baby is between five days and two weeks old. While we ask you to contact us about planning your newborn photoshoot ahead of time, we’ll wait to set a firm date until your baby is born. That way, we can find the perfect moment.

What colour backdrop is best for newborn photography?

A.The backdrop you use for your newborn photoshoot will depend on the vision you have for your images. I have various backdrops to choose from in my home studio and a large collection of props we can use to add more charm and personality to your photos.

How many outfits should I bring for newborn photos?

A.We will discuss your vision for your baby photoshoot before your session, but you don’t need to worry about the outfits — the team at Bec Gordon Photography will take care of your newborn’s swaddle for you.

What are the challenges of newborn photography?

A.The simple truth is that newborn photography isn’t easy! Each shot requires patience, especially as newborns can be a little unpredictable with their behaviour. Of course, any newborn photographer will need to consider the comfort and safety of newborns at all times.

On top of all of this, the other facets of photography — lighting, props and angles — must be considered, too!

Is 1 month too old for newborn photos?

A.Babies are typically considered newborns until they are about two weeks old. While the difference between two weeks and one month may not seem huge, the photo shoot will be quite different as one-month-olds pose differently. For instance, they may be awake for their shoot. They may also need more time to be soothed in case they start getting fussy.

However, in saying that we are happy to photograph your baby at any age!

Can parents be included in newborn photos?

A.Parents can absolutely be included in a newborn shoot as this is a great way to document your beginning as a family! However, some parents opt to have their newborn as the sole focus of the shoot. At the end of the day, it all comes down to your preferences and comfort level.

How can I keep my newborn calm during a photoshoot?

A.As a newborn photographer, Bec gives ample time during the shoot for your newborn to be fed and have a nappy change. Don’t be afraid to take breaks to swaddle your baby and make soothing cooing sounds.

At the end of the day, you know your baby best. We are more than happy to guide you during the newborn shoot to keep your little one happy.

Will the camera flash affect my newborn?

A.Sudden camera flashes may disturb or startle your newborn, especially as their eyes are still developing. This is why it’s so important to work with an established newborn photographer who knows how to use natural light and flash diffusers to make the shoot as safe as possible.

Do I need to do any aftercare following a newborn photoshoot?

A.In the same way that there’s no need to take any special precautions before a shoot, you don’t have to worry about doing any medical checks or specialised skin routines following a newborn photography session.

We’d be happy to give you a thorough run-down of how we conduct our photoshoots so that you have an idea of what to expect.

How should parents pose during a newborn shoot?

A.The best tip for parents is to keep poses as natural as possible during the shoot. You can opt to support your baby’s neck and hold them close to mimic the position of them curling up.

You can also give gentle kisses and touches to add some tenderness into your photos. Don’t worry; we can guide you through each pose to make sure the photo’s composition is perfect without compromising your baby’s safety.

How do you pose twins during a newborn shoot?

A.Twin wraps are a common prop we use for shooting newborn twins. The same rules of newborn photography apply to twins, so we still make sure your babies are supported and positioned securely.

From there, some popular poses are placing newborn twins side-by-side or having them nestle each other. Please feel free to look through our portfolio for inspiration!

What should I do if my newborn becomes fussy during the photoshoot?

A.The first thing to do when your baby starts getting fussy is to stay calm. Don’t worry about disrupting the flow of the shoot, as your baby’s safety is our first priority. Whether you need to feed your baby or rock them gently for a bit, please feel free to take the time you need to calm your newborn down.

Can you provide props?

A.In my home studio, I have a huge variety of props, as well as swaddles, blankets, headbands and bonnets in various colours. You’re welcome to bring sentimental items to your newborn photoshoot, but Bec has all the props covered.
