In my work I speak with parents every day. For some of them, I’ve captured all of their family milestones from pregnancy photography through to ongoing family photography. For others, it’s not until their kids are older that they realise how important family photos are and regret not taking professional newborn photos. By then, that ship had sailed.
There are so many reasons why newborn photography is important and I’m going to share just a few of them with you in this blog.
They’re only so little for such a short time
It’s one of those clichés that is thrown about that babies are only babies for a very short time. As a mum of three, I can tell you that this is one cliché that is absolutely true. The newborn stage lasts only for a few short months. That time flies by in a blur of sleepless nights and endless nappy changes. And it only speeds up from there.
What can you look back on to remember their tiny fingers and toes, their adorable sleepy smiles and how they fit so perfectly in your arms? Your newborn photography. A photoshoot with your newborn is a way to stop time. To capture those moments that, at the time, felt so hard but looking back were actually some of the most precious memories you hold.
Wall-worthy photos
These days, everyone has a camera in their hand at all times. Our camera reels on our phones are filled with hundreds, or even thousands, newborn photos and snaps of our children. But, if you’re anything like the majority of people, those photos stay on your phone, never to see the light of day.
Those candid photos you take on your phone are so invaluable. But so is having images that you can proudly hang on your walls. It’s the most priceless art you can hang in your home!
This is my favourite reason why newborn photography is important. I love helping my clients to select images for prints and photo books, knowing those photos will take pride of place in their home. Their tiny babies will grow up seeing those images and hearing the stories of those special newborn moments.
Capture your growing family
Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, welcoming a newborn into your family is a big change. And it’s also something to celebrate for the whole family.
The photoshoot isn’t just for your newborn… it’s for you too. I always like to include a family photo in newborn shoots, whatever your family looks like. If you have other children, we can include them in photos. Or we can just capture you and your precious bundle.
Often, mums are nervous about being photographed so soon after having a baby. Trust me, if you don’t get in the photo, you’ll regret it later. You made a human. You’re gorgeous and worth celebrating so get in the photo. I promise it’ll be worth it.
Someone else does the thinking
I take photos of beautiful babies every week. I have the props and lighting in my studio to create the images you’re looking for. I know the best age for a newborn photo shoot and can help you plan your shoot even before your baby arrives. And I have all the tricks of the trade for getting your baby to sleep through the whole thing!
As soon as you step into my studio, you can put your feet up and relax. You may need to feed your baby or give them a few little cuddles, but the rest is up to me. Some parents have even fallen asleep on the couch while the shoot is in progress! It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on some of that missed sleep.
You’ve got enough on your plate as a new parent. You don’t need to stress about trying to take the photos yourself. That’s what I’m here for. This is one thing I can take off your plate and you’ll be thankful for a lifetime that you did so.
